About Us

Carbon Offsets To Alleviate Poverty (www.cotap.org) is an early-stage nonprofit whose mission is to enable individuals in developed countries to simultaneously tackle the world’s biggest environmental challenge (climate change) and the world’s biggest humanitarian challenge (extreme poverty). Cotap will transparently match individuals’ carbon offset purchases to forestry projects in order to fill the forestry carbon finance gap, employ the economically vulnerable, and restore landscapes. On an annual basis, Cotap aims to eventually catalyze millions of tons of validated carbon sequestration, hundreds of thousands of planted trees, and tens of millions of dollars in wages to hundreds of thousands of villagers who live on $1 per day. Unlike models which involve loans, grants, matched savings, or guarantees, Cotap involves wages. It all begins with a website, and that begins with you.

Skills

  • PHP, MySQL, Flash, Java, API’s, Drupal, front-end (HTML/Javascript/CSS), back-end, agile/iterativemethodology, multiple browser compatibility testing, smoke testing, split testing.
  • Familiarity with cost-effective, open source tools i.e. Google analytics, payments/checkout, video streaming, surveys, landing page testing, email marketing, and social media.

Responsibilities

  • Ruthlessly transform mockups/vision into an online presence which can proudly stand up alongside “performance philanthropy” sites  such as GlobalGiving, MicroPlace, SaveTogether, Vittana, and Kiva.
  • Build custom features and collaborate with CMS volunteer, system architect advisor, content creators.
  • Write efficient, crisp code that can be interpreted by others and is mindful of future site plans.

Ideal Profile

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field plus 3+ years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated passions for society and the planet. Talk is cheap.
  • Technically you’re overqualified, but you see vast potential both in Cotap and your potential role within it.
  • Seasoned developer with prior track record at a successful consumer-facing “web 2.0” startup.
  • An almost-suspicious catalog of glowing LinkedIn recommendations.
  • Final-round reject for CTO at one of the above-mentioned sites. They flipped a coin and you lost.
  • Positive attitude, committed, accountable, collaborative, judgment, discretion, humility.
  • Superior sense of humor and ability to interact with non-tech people. Zero digerati ego.
  • Big plusses: Wicked sensibility regarding the user experience (design, content, sequence/flow). You follow and have opinions about topics like customer development, minimum viable product, etc.

Compensation & Other

  • This is a part-time, volunteer position and may evolve into a full-time/paid position for the right person(s).
  • Not location-specific. If you are a Bay Area resident, you may be eligible for occasional, performance-based compensation of beer, food, and use of the founder’s hot tub.
  • Ability to commit 5 or more hours per week for a minimum of 12 weeks, with opportunities to expand.
  • If you have several, but not all, of the above skills you are still encouraged to apply. Multiple openings possible – depending on fit, complementary skillsets, etc.
  • If you want to be involved on the ground floor of a bold, fledgling-stage organization that has massive potential to change the world, you are encouraged to apply.

To apply

Send a resume and thoughtful cover letter to volunteer@cotap.org by April 10th. Include “Sr. Web Developer” in the subject line. Due to our small staff, only the most competitive applicants will be contacted. Thanks for your interest!
