Celebrate Kiva’s 7th Birthday with the Seattle Lending Team on October 22nd

What: Kiva’s 7th Birthday Celebration

Where: Elephant & Castle @ Red Lion Hotel

1415 Fifth Avenue, Seattle, WA 98101

When:  October 22nd from 6:30-9:30pm

Details: A casual gathering for Kiva lenders and those interested in learning more about Kiva. Food and drinks will be available for purchase through Elephant & Castle. We’ll have lending stations, information on Kiva, and lots of fun.

Why: Seven years ago, Kiva launched a community experiment to crowdfund microloans for the world’s working poor. Their vision was to raise awareness and make it possible for anyone with an Internet connection and $25 to take action against global poverty. Kiva makes it possible for each of us to realize the power we have to lend our support to individuals, from helping a student attend school in Kenya, bringing clean energy to families in Cambodia, to helping a small business create jobs right here in the U.S.  The choice is yours.

Since Kiva’s founding in October 2005, more than 23,500 Kiva lending teams have sprung up in cities around the world from Paris to Seattle. The Seattle lending team is one of the largest city-themed teams on Kiva and its 398 members have lent $182,625 in 5,949 loans since it was founded in 2008. Each of those on the Seattle lending team know the power of a $25 loan, that through crowdfunding and compassion can support the dream of an individual halfway across the world. Kiva gives each of us in Seattle a chance to be part of creating change in the world.

Together Kiva’s lending teams and an engaged online community of 835,000 lenders have helped to crowdfund almost $360 million in loans to 880,000 people in more than 66 countries, including the U.S. Proof of a sustainable model and a compelling mission.

Visitors to Kiva.org can browse through individual profiles and stories and choose individuals they want to support with a loan of $25 or more. Loans funded through Kiva have a 98% repayment rate, so the money you lend is truly a loan, not a donation. When the loan is paid back, you can relend the money over and over again setting in motion a ripple effect of change.
