POSITION TITLE: Business Manager
SUPERVISOR: President
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The business manager is responsible for coordinating the day‐to‐day operations, financial management and business planning activities of the Boulder Institute. This position will develop and implement operational policies,
procedures and strategies which will enhance efficiency, encourage teamwork and improve the quality of our
programs. The business manager will provide direct and active assistance to the Vice Presidents as they strive for
the operational and financial success of the Boulder Institute.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILY:
Establishing and overseeing the financial, administrative and information systems which allow the various offices of
Boulder and its program sites to communicate and coordinate with each other.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Coordinate the daily operations of the company with an emphasis on streamlining daily functions to
improve productivity, cooperation and coordination of the various offices and program sites of the Boulder
Institute.
• Select, develop and maintain internal back office systems for project management and communication
between offices.
• Ensure compliance with federal, state and industry requirements.
• Ensure appropriate and satisfactory systems are in place for monitoring group performance against plans
and budgets.
• Lead budget planning.
• Oversee a grant tracking and reporting process that provides donors with timely and accurate reports on the
use of their funds.
• Work closely with the Institute’s Vice President of Finance and Administration to insure the accuracy and
financial reports and the usefulness of financial projections.
• Foster an employee culture that supports the vision and ethos of the Boulder Institute.
• Actively participate in the company communication effort through communication to all employees.
• Provide coaching in budgeting, planning and controlling to program managers as necessary.
• Other tasks as assigned, in support of the Boulder Institute’s objectives.

• Knowledge of upper level financial procedures and reports
Ability to:
• Complete assignments within specified deadlines accurately and efficiently;
• Perform effectively with frequent interruptions;
• Use judgment and prioritize own work;
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered during the performance of required duties;
• Provide coordination and management to a geographically dispersed team, using web‐based project management tools;
• Communicate effectively with excellent writing and interpersonal skills;
• Take initiative and pro‐actively seeks opportunities for improvement;
• Manage implementation of IT and communication solutions for the operations of a small organization;
• Liaise with partners, funders and stakeholders at all levels, experienced with grant writing, budgeting, reporting and ensuring compliance;
• Work cross‐culturally, with ability to relate successfully in developing countries and/or with professionals
from developing countries;
• Work with Excel, Word and Power Point, comfortable with web‐based communication tools (e.g. Skype);
• Write and speak in fluent English, able to carry out work‐related conversations in Spanish.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
• Bachelor’s degree (Master’s an advantage);
• Minimum of 5 years of direct management experience in a relevant field (e.g. education, conference
organization, microfinance, community banking), preferably in non‐profit organizations;
• Citizenship or permanent residency of the US is a requirement for this position.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The Boulder Institute operates with offices and staff located in Seattle, Chicago and Santiago and program sites in
Chile, Italy, the UK and the US. Employee must be able to be flexible in hours to accommodate communications
with people located in different time zones. Employee must be able to travel for up to three weeks at a time to
assist in the implementation of programs.
